THYROID NODULE-OVERVIEW
SUMMARY
1. 76% of the population have incidentally discovered nodules, 5% of these are malignant.
2. Virtually all hot + cystic nodules are benign.
3. Never biopsy a hot nodule ⟹ histology masquarades as follicular thyroid CA ⟹ unnecessary surgery.
4. Cold nodules in Grave's disease may still be malignant: investigate.
5. Cold nodules in MNG have malignant potential: investigate.
6. All palpable nodules should be viewed with US.
7. 5% of children receiving neck radiation go on to develop papillary thyroid CA, colloid adenomas.
