TBI-SEIZURES, LATE (POST TRAUMATIC EPILEPSY)

SUMMARY

1. Seizures occurring > 1 week after TBI reflect more permanent structural & physiologic changes within the brain & represent the onset of post-traumatic epilepsy.

2. Post-traumatic epilepsy is more common in the elderly and are unusual in children.

3. Because of the high rate of recurrence, long-term treatment with anti-seizure drugs is recommended after a first late post-traumatic seizure (Grade 1B).
