STROKE-RECOVERY TIME COURSE
SUMMARY
1. Peak neurological recovery from stroke occurs within the first 1-3 months[1].
2. Afterwards recovery may occur much more slowly for up to 1 year.
3. The course of recovery is a predictable phenomenon; it is initially very rapid and then slows[2]
.
4. The return of motor power is not synonymous with recovery of function as functional & communication recovery may continue for months after neurological recovery is complete.
5. Function may be hampered by the inability to perform fractionated movements, apraxias, sensory deficits, communication disorders and cognitive impairment.
