STROKE-MOBILITY INTERVENTIONS, THERAPUTIC BALANCE TRAINING
SUMMARY
1. A Cochrane review of seven trials by Barclay-Goddard et al. concluded that force platform biofeedback therapy (visual or auditory) can improve standing balance, but not functional balance[1].
2. Another systematic review of 22 trials suggested that biofeedback therapy was superior to usual therapy or placebo at improving lower limb activities, both balance and gait[2].
3. Systematic review found that the use of VR with postural training (6 studies) but not Wii Fit balance board (7 studies) significantly improved performance on the Berg Balance Scale and Timed Up and Go Test[3].
4. Patients experience a stroke are at a higher risk of falling with 25-39% of patients falling while on the stroke rehabilitation unit and 73% falling within 6 months of discharge form hospital. Falls prevention programs may not reduce the rate of falls post stroke[4].
