SUMMARY
1. Folate deficiency.
2. Folate antagonists: carbamazepine, valproate, trimethoprim, phenytoin, sulfasalazine.
3. Ethnicity: Hispanics.
4. Previous pregnancy with spina bifida (1 in 20 risk after first or 3-5% chance; after 2 children risk is 1 in 2); patient with spina bifida has a 2.5% risk of having a child with similar issue.
5. Maternal diabetes.
6. Maternal hypothermia.
