SUMMARY

1. During sleep there is decreased sensitivity to the external environment & increased activity of the parasympathetic system.

2. Sleep comprises alternating REM & NREM states that cycle at a rhythm of 90 minutes.

2. Sleep of 8 to 8.5 hours is considered restorative in adults.

3. Sleep is entered through NREM, the NREM-REM cycle occurs 3-6x during an 8-hour period.
