From NeuroRehab.wiki

SUMMARY

1. Pros of shoulder slings: may be used when the patient ambulates for comfort and may prevent further trauma.

2. Cons: may encourage contractures in shoulder adduction/internal rotation or elbow flexion.

3. Other treatments: FES, arm board, arm trough, lap board (particularly in wheelchair users).

4. Prevention: early reactivation of shoulder muscles (supraspinatus, deltoid) using FES or using passive support (arm trough).
