RENAL TUBULAR ACIDOSIS (RTA)-TYPE 1 MANAGEMENT

SUMMARY

Hypokalaemia is reversed with alkali therapy(sodium bicarbonate):

1. Increase sodium bicarbonate to distal nephron increases urine pH => more hydrogen is
secreted before saturating gradient occurs

2. Sodium load expands ECF volume => reduces drive for sodium reabsorption and reduce aldosterone secretion.
