From NeuroRehab.wiki

SUMMARY

1. In general, proximal (iliac and femoral-popliteal) stenosis and short-segment occlusions are best treated endovascularly.
2. Long lesions and occlusions best treated surgically.

3. With acute peripheral arterial occlusion, heparin protects the collateral circulation during evaluation by preventing thrombus formation around the new clot.
