1. Neuronal regeneration/axonal sprouting.

2. Neuronal reorganization/unmasking.

3. Resolution of diaschisis.

4. Substitution: techniques/new strategies are learned to compensate for deficits and to achieve a particular task.

5. Redundancy: recovery of function based on activity of uninjured brain areas (latent areas) that normally would contribute to that function.

6. Vicariation: functions taken over by brain areas not originally managing that function.
