SUMMARY
1. Artherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory response of the arterial wall.
2. The initial injury to the endothelium causes endothelial dysfunction.
3. Monocytes migrate into the intima, transform into foam cells; platelets activate; smooth muscle cells proliferate.
4. Lipids accumulate in the SM cells & foam cells.
5. Forms a fibromuscular plaque: fibromuscular layer with cholesterol core.
