OSTEOPOROSIS-PROPHYLACTIC SUPPLEMENTATION
SUMMARY
1. For post-menopausal women with normal serum calcium & vitamin D, the common practice of supplementation with a combination of 1000mg of calcium, and 400 IU of vitamin D was found to have no effect on the incidence of fractures.
2. Supplementation at this level was found to increase a woman's risk of developing kidney stones.
3. Vitamin D does appear to play a role in preventing falls in the elderly.
