ORTHOSES-PEDIATRIC
SUMMARY
1. Caster cart: used for children with developmental delay in ambulatory skills as an initial mobility aid. Common in spina bifida.
2. Standing frame: follows successful use of a caster cart, 8-15 mths of age. Helps balance the body in space and allows free use of the upper limbs for participation in activities.
3. Parapodium: for children who are unlikely to become functional walkers, they should first demonstrate adequate use of a standing frame and exhibit a desire to ambulate; for children aged 2.5-5 years. Children swivel from side-to-side to ambulate.
4. Reciprocating gait orthosis: AKA bilateral Hip Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis. The purpose of the RGO is to provide contralateral hip extension with ipsilateral hip flexion. For children aged 3-6 years.
