SUMMARY

1. Monoclonal gammopathies are more common in patients with neuropathy than the general population.

2. IgM more strongly assoc. with peripheral neuropathy than IgG or IgA.

3. Anti-MAG (myelin assoc. glycoprotein) Ab assoc. with distal demyelinating sensory neuropathy.

4. Anti-Gd1b Ab assoc. with sensory ataxia and cryoglobulinaemia which in turn causes vasculitic-type and painful sensory neuropathies.

5. IgG paraproteins assoc. with myeloma, amyloidosis, POEMS syndrome (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal protein & skin changes).

6. Serum immunofixation electrophoresis more sensitive than serum protein electrophoresis.
