NEGLECT-DEFINITION

From NeuroRehab.wiki

SUMMARY

1. Unilateral neglect is a lack of orienting response to stimuli presented unilaterally.

2. Neglect cannot be diagnosed unless the primary sensory modality required to sense the stimulus is intact.

3. More common in patients with right sided (42%) than left sided lesions (8%) and is persistent with right sided strokes[1]

4. Almost always contra-lesional.

5. Poor prognosis for functional outcome, poorer mobility, longer LOS in rehab, and slower rates of improvement.

6. Hier et al. found that, of those who recover, neglect had a median recovery time of 9 wks, 70% recovered by 15 wks, 90% recovered by 20 wks[4]
