MOBILITY ASSESSMENT-6 MINUTE WALKING TEST (6MWT)

SUMMARY

1. The 6MWT is a functional walking test which measures the distance that a patient can walk on a flat, hard surface in a period of 6 minutes. It is used to determine functional capacity.
2. The 6MWT requires the patient to walk at the fastest speed over a period of 6 minutes.
3. Walking is performed along a 30 m walking course.
4. The subject is permitted to use a walking aid if required & allowed to rest during the course of walking.

ADVANTAGES
5. The 6MWT is quick and easy to administer, requiring no specialized equipment or training.
6. Reflects the sub-maximal aerobic capacity, more reflective in performance of ADLs.

DISADVANTAGES
7. Not suitable for use with those unable to ambulate.
