SUMMARY
The iris is a contractile structure, consisting of 2 groups of muscles:
1. Sphincter pupillae: circular group of muscles, innervated by the Short Ciliary nerves (branch of the ciliary ganglion); constrict the pupil to parasympathetic stimulation.
2. Dilator pupillae: radial group of muscles, innervated by the Long Ciliary nerves; dilate the pupil to sympathetic stimulation.
