SUMMARY

1. S. aureus: causes 80-90% of staphylococcal IE and is the most common cause of acute IE. Seen in IVDU & prosthetic valves.
2. Gram-negative organisms: causes of acute IE. Seen in IVDU & prosthetic valves.

3. Strep: accounts for 60-80% of all endocarditis & causes subacute IE. S. bovis is assoc. with GI malignancy in the elderly, polyps & diverticulosis. Seen in IVDU & prosthetic valves.
4. Enterococcus: causes subacute IE and found in older men with genitourinary disease or after instrumentation or surgery.
