SUMMARY

1. Classic physical exam findings include new regurgitant murmurs, Osler nodes (tender nodules on the pads of the digits), Janeway lesions (nontender erythematous/hemorrhagic macular/nodular lesions on the palms or soles), splinter hemorrhages & Roth spots.

2. Occasionally, endocarditis presents only with signs of embolic events, such as black toes or septic emboli to other organs.

3. Diagnosis of endocarditis is by the Duke criteria & echo.

4. Onset of heart failure is a poor prognostic indicator.
