DYSPHAGIA-RECOVERY AFTER STROKE
SUMMARY
1. Few studies available. Wilkinson et al. (2002): 12-month retrospective cohort study of 186 teaching hospital inpatients.
2. Subjects who tolerated grade 1 fluids (or thinner) & modified soft diet (or better) 7 days post-stroke did not require PEG.
3. Subjects who did not tolerate grade 2 fluids 7-14 days post-stroke could not tolerate a normal diet by 28 days post-stroke.
4. 50% of subjects who did not tolerate grade 3 thickened fluids & pureed diet 14 days post-stroke required PEG.
5. Of subjects who tolerated grade 3 fluids at day 7, 36% tolerated normal diet at day 28.
6. Logemann (1991): recovery of swallowing function in most brainstem strokes occurs in the first 3 weeks.
