DIABETES MELLITUS-PRE DIABETES INX

From NeuroRehab.wiki

SUMMARY

1. Whole blood glucose values are about 15% less than serum/plasma values.

2. Finger sticks are acceptable for self-monitoring of known diabetics, but only plasma/serum should be used for diagnosis of DM.

3. Normal FPG < 100mg/dL.

4. Impaired fasting glucose (IFG): FPG 100-125 mg/dL.

5. Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT): 2-hr plasma glucose of 140-199 mg/dL after a 75-gm oral glucose load (OGTT). This is more sensitive than FPG.

6. HbA1c 5.7-6.4% is supportive of pre-diabetes; retest patients with results in this range using the FPG/OGTT.
