SUMMARY

1. Enhance insulin sensitivity and may help preserve some function of pancreatic beta cells.

2. 2 approved agents: rosiglitazone and pioglitazone.

3. Favorable effects: modest reduction in blood pressure, increased HDL, and decreased TGs.

4. Adverse effects: hepatotoxicity, luid retention and increased risk of exacerbating stable CHF, weight gain, increased risk of fractures.
