SUMMARY

1. Decreased stroke volume, reflex increase in HR.

2. Decreased blood volume, decrease exercise tolerance.

3. HR increases approximately 0.5 beats/minute/day, leading to immobilization tachycardia with minimal workload.

4. SV may decrease to 15% of normal within 2 weeks of bedrest as a result of blood volume changes and venous pooling occurs in the lower extremities.

5. Decreased maximal oxygen extraction (VO2 max) occurs in 3-5 days post-immobilization.

6. Postural hypotension due to CVS effects and autonomic instability.
