CORD SYNDROME-ANTERIOR CORD SYNDROME
SUMMARY
1. A lesion affecting the anterior 2/3 of the spinal cord.
2. This can occur from flexion injuries, retropulsed disc or bone fragments, direct injury or anterior spinal artery lesions.
3. Results in variable loss of motor function (corticospinal tract), sensitivity to pain & temperature, pinprick sensation (spinothalamic tract), with preservation of proprioception and light touch & deep pressure sensation (dorsal column).
4. Spinocerebellar tract involved.
5. Prognosis: only 10-20% chance of motor recovery.
