CN XI (ACCESSORY)-C. COURSE

SUMMARY

1. CN XI lies dorsal to the vagus in the jugular foramen, behind the jugular tubercle.

2. Outside the skull, the cranial fibers pass to the vagus: motor to pharynx, larynx, oesophagus & soft palate.

3. Neck: lies on the IJV over the lateral mass of C1 and passes into the SCM (which it supplies).

4. Posterior triangle: lies over the levator scapulae, behind the scalene muscles).

5. Then passes under the trapezius (which it supplies).
