SUMMARY

CRANIAL FIBERS
1. Fibers originate from the nucleus ambiguus.
2. Leave the medullar as a series of rootlets below the vagus, between the olive and inferior cerebellar peduncle.
3. They join the spinal root (coming up through the foramen magnum) in the pontine cistern.

SPINAL FIBERS
4. Spinal roots arise mainly from C2-4 anterior horn cells.
5. These arise from the lateral surface behind the denticular ligaments (unlike other anterior horn cells).
6. The cranial and spinal roots combine to pass through the jugular foramen.
