CERVICAL SPINE-CRUCIFORM LIGAMENT

SUMMARY

1. Cruciform ligament: made up of the transverse and longitudinal bands

2. Transverse band: attaches to the back of the atlas

3. Longitudinal band: attaches from the back of the body of the axis (C2) to the foramen magnum

4. Rupture of this ligament can allow the dens to fatally compress the medulla
