SUMMARY

Evaluate the patient, job and match the patient to the job.

EVALUATION OF THE PATIENT
1. NYHA class 1: can perform ≥ 7 METs
2. NYHA class 2: can perform 5-7 METs
3. NYHA class 3: can perform 2-5 METs
4. NYHA class 4: can perform < 2 METs

FUNCTIONAL EXERCISE STRESS TEST
5. Recommendations are made based on the maximum work load performance.
6. 7 METs or greater: can return to work to most jobs in the United States.
7. 5-7 METs: can return to sedentary job and household chores.
8. 3-4 METs or less: not suitable to return to employment (Flores & Zohman, 1998).
