CARDIAC REHABILITATION-EXERCISE TYPES
SUMMARY
1. Exercise prescriptions for the cardiac patients should specify the type of exercise, the intensity, duration and frequency.
2. Exercise should be rhythmic, isotonic and aerobic; should use large muscle masses and should not involve a large isometric component.
3. Sessions of exercise should incorporate aerobic activity, such as walking/jogging, stationary cycling or water aerobics, warm-up and cool-down periods.
4. Resistance exercise (using lightweights) may be added as appropriate. Surgical and MI patients should wait 3-6 weeks before beginning resistance training.
5. Resistance includes: isometric & isotonic exercises.
