CARDIAC REHABILITATION-EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY
SUMMARY
1. Total O2 consumption (VO2): represents the total O2 consumption of the whole body, corresponds more to skeletal muscles.
2. Aerobic capacity (VO2 max): O2 consumption during maximal exercise. Reaches a plateau despite further increases in workload. Provides a reliable & reproducible measure of dynamic work capacity. Done with treadmill or leg-cycle ergometer testing. Important in prognostication.
3. Myocardial O2 consumption: measured with cardiac catheterization.
4. Double product (RPP): refers to the work required of the heart, RPP = SBP * HR.
5. Metabolic equivalent (MET): ratio of working metabolic rate to resting (basal) metabolic rate. 1 MET = basal metabolic rate.
