CALCIUM-HYPOCALCEMIA CAUSES

From NeuroRehab.wiki

SUMMARY

Most commonly:
1. Vitamin D deficiency
2. CKD: secondary hyperparathyroidism due to decreased renal conversion of activated Vit D.
3. Severe pancreatitis
4. Rhabdomyolysis
5. Hypomagnesemia (always check magnesium level!)
6. Hyperphosphatemia: in renal excretion of phosphorus in which calcium chelates with the phosphorus.

Less commonly:
7. Hungry bone syndrome following parathyroidectomy
8. Hypoparathyroidism
9. Pseudohypoparathyroidism
10. Citrate: used as an anticoagulant in whole blood. It chelates calcium in the serum, causing hypocalcemia after massive whole blood transfusions.
