SUMMARY

1. Most common ligament involved is the anterior talo-fibular ligament (weakest tensile strength of the lateral ligament complex).

2. Most common mechanism is inversion with plantar flexion.

3. Syndesmotic injuries may require surgical intervention.

4. Ankle injuries are graded from simple distortion in the ligament with no instability (grade 1) to partial (grade 2) or complete tear of the ligament with instability (grade 3).
