AMBULATION AIDS-CRUTCHES
SUMMARY
1. A crutch is defined as a device that provides support from the axilla to the floor.
2. Crutch length: measure the distance from the anterior axillary fold to a point 6 inches lateral to the fifth toe with the patient standing with the shoulders relaxed.
3. Handpiece: measure with the patient’s elbow flexed 30o, the wrist in maximal extension, and the fingers forming a fist after the total crutch height is determined with the crutch 3' lateral to the foot.
4. Crutches are not designed to be rests for body support so as to reduce the incidence of compressive radial neuropathies or plexopathies.
