ACID BASE DISORDERS-ACIDOSIS & CALCIUM

SUMMARY

1. Acidosis decreases the fraction of bound calcium and increases the ionized calcium.

2. Correction of acido­sis prior to correction of hypocalcemia in this setting removes the protective effect of the acidosis, and can precipitate hypocalcemic seizures.
