SUMMARY

1. Autonomic system response: fight-or-flight.

2. Activation of somatosensory cortices (S1–S2) provides information regarding the quality & intensity of pain.

3. Higher processing involves parietal & insular regions, contributing to an overall sense of intrusion and unpleasantness.

4. Convergence of pathways with frontal regions (anterior cingulate cortex): for attention & emotional valence of the pain experience.
