SUMMARY


1. O: gluteal surface of the ileum (behind posterior gluteal line), lateral mass of sacrum (below articular surface), sacrotuberous ligament & lumbar fascia. 
2. I: most fibers - insert into iliotibial band that inserts into lateral tibial condyle; deep fibers - insert into the gluteal tuberosity of the femur. 
3. NS: inferior gluteal n.
4. A: extends, abducts & externally rotates the thigh.
