PAIN-KETAMINE
SUMMARY
1. Used to treat various chornic pain syndromes.
2. Potent NMDA receptor antagonist.
3. Low dose Ketamine produces strong analgesia in neuropathic pain states by enhancing descending inhibition and anti-inflammatory effects at central sites.
4. Ketamine produces potent analgesia during administration, while 3 studies on the effect of prolonged infusion (4-14 days) show long-term analgesic effects up to 3 months.
5. SE: psychedelic symptoms (hallucinations, short term memory loss), nausea/vomiting, somnolence, arrhythmias, hepatotoxicity.
