SUMMARY

1. The nature of the pain dictates the options.

2. Often mechanical/intermittent pain and activity-related pain is not assisted by medications.

3. Don't overdo "breakthrough pain" medications!

4. Constant/stable pain is certainly more likely to derive functional benefit.

5. Neuropathic pain: can be intermittent or constant and may respond favortably to medications.

6. Main goals: sleep quality, stability of symptoms and maintaining function.
