SUMMARY

1. Consists of a proximal calf band, two uprights, ankle joints, and an attachment to the shoe to anchor the AFO.

2. The posterior metal portion of the calf band should be 1.5 to 3 inches wide to adequately distribute pressure.

3. The calf band should be 1 inch below the fibular neck to prevent a compressive common peroneal nerve palsy.

4. A leather strap with Velcro is used to close the calf band, because it provides ease of closure for patients with only one functional upper limb.

5. Indications: fluctuating oedema, large/heavy patients, excessive sweating; contraindications: cosmesis, working in wet muddy conditions.
