SUMMARY

Two types:

1. UMN bowel: injuries above T12 (conus medullaris). Anal sphincter becomes spastic, voluntary control is lost but reflex activity is intact. Spastic anal sphincter contributes to constipation.

2. LMN bowel: injuries below T12 (conus medullaris). Anal sphincter becomes flaccid, voluntary and reflex control are lost. Absence of peristalsis after colonic, sigmoid and rectal denervation.
