SUMMARY

1. Venous thrombosis occurs in >50% of unprotected patients. Note: The risk for PE is highest during the second and third week.

2. The incidence of heterotopic ossification is high (>50%) after THR and is the most common complication, although <10% lose ROM.

3. The mortality rate for those who survive a hip fracture is 20%-30% after 1 year and 40% after 2 years.

4. Approximately 50% of patients return to their premorbid level of functioning.
