SUMMARY

1. Also called Modified Barium Swallow (MBS).

2. Gold standard for evaluation and treatment of dysphagia.

3. Different amounts and consistencies of solids and liquids mixed with barium are swallowed while visualizing the anatomy of swallowing.

4. If abnormal swallowing is identified, the clinician determines the pathologic causes for dysphagia.

5. Compensatory techniques, postures, maneuvers, sensory enhancements, and bolus modifications are attempted to determine methods of safe feeding.

6. If no method of safe feeding can be determined, alternative methods of feeding must be considered.
