SUMMARY

1. Protecting upper urinary tracts from sustained high filling and voiding pressures (> 40cm water).

2. Achieving regular bladder emptying, avoiding stasis and bladder overdistension and minimising post-void residual volumes to less than 100mls.

3. Preventing and treating complications such as UTI, stones, strictures and autonomic dysreflexia.

4. Maintaining continence and avoiding frequency and urgency.

5. Choosing a technique which is compatible with a person's lifestyle.
