SUMMARY

1. Measure the tip of the cane to the level of the greater trochanter with the patient in an upright position to determine the proper cane length, elbow should be flexed at 20o.

2. Quad canes (narrow or wide) are for increased base of support.

3. It is held on the unaffected side to lessen the force on the hip with the pathology.

4. The cane helps decrease the force generated across the affected hip joint by decreasing the work of the gluteus medius-minimus complex.

5. This occurs when the UL exerts force on the cane to help minimize pelvic drop on the side opposite the weight-bearing lower limb.

6. Patients should be instructed on how to ascend and descend stairs.
