SUMMARY

1. Parasympathetic: pre-ganglionic parasympathetic fibres (via the nerve of the pterygoid canal, arriving via the greater pterosal nerve) from the superior salivary nucleus relay in the ganglion

2. Sympathetic: post-ganglionic sympathetic fibres from the superior cervical ganglion (via the deep pterosal nerve) pass through and do not relay here

3. Sensory: branch of the maxillary nerve, passes through the ciliary ganglion without relay to the trigeminal ganglion
