SUMMARY

1. Mixed nerve: mostly motor

2. Arises in the medulla: leaves through the jugular foramen

3. Sensory: larynx

4. Motor: pharynx (efferent part of the gag reflex), larynx (including vocal cord, via the recurrent laryngeal nerve) & upper oesophagus

5. Autonomic: parasympathetic to the heart & gut (up to 2/3 of the transverse colon)
