CN XII (HYPOGLOSSAL)-B. ORIGIN

SUMMARY
1. The hypoglossal nucleus lies in the midline of the medulla (somatic & motor), in the hypoglossal trigone in the floor of the fourth ventricle.
2. The fibres run ventrally through the inferior olivary nucleus and appear between the pyramids & olives as a series of rootlets.
3. These join into 2 roots that enter the hypoglossal canal in the occipital bone.
4. They pass over the atlanto-occipital joint and emerge as a single nerve.
5. The exit is medial & posterior to the jugular foramen.
