SUMMARY
1. Fibres exit the medulla as rootlets between the olive & inferior cerebellar peduncle above the vagus.
2. It emerges in the pontine cistern to run lateral to the jugular tubercle in the occipital bone to enter the jugular foramen.
3. Here it is situated in the anterior compartment, lateral to the inferior petrosal sinus.
4. Perforating the dura & arachnoid the nerve is distended into its superior & inferior ganglia which houses the cell bodies of the afferent fibers.
