SUMMARY

1. The occulomotor nucleus lies near the midline in the periaqueductal grey mater, at the level of superior colliculus.

2. Two components: somatic (motor to the striated extraocular muscles) & visceral/parasympathetic (motor to the smooth muscle, levator palpebrae superioris).

3. The visceral/parasympathetic component → Edinger-Westphal nucleus lies cranial to the occulomotor nucleus.

4. The fibers (24,000) traverse the midbrain with a lateral convexity and pass through the red nucleus & substantia nigra.
