SUMMARY

1. Apical ligament: attaches from the apex of the dens to the anterior margin of the foramen magnum. This is a remnant of the notochord.

2. Alar ligaments: attaches to either side of the apical ligament at the apex of the dens to the foramen magnum. These limit the rotation of the head.
